Hip Pain

Hip pain can be felt in the hip, groin, outer hip or buttock, and the cause may be arthritis, bursitis, a tendon problem, a labral tear or a strained muscle. Physical therapy finds the cause and builds strength and motion around the joint. Xcelerate Physical Therapy treats hip pain in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

Where your hip pain sits and what it points to

Hip arthritis

Stiffness and a deep ache in the groin or hip, with hip pain when walking or getting out of a chair. See Arthritis & Joint Pain.

Outer hip pain

Hip bursitis and gluteal tendinopathy, together called greater trochanteric pain syndrome, cause outer hip pain and hip pain lying on side at night.

Hip labral tear and hip impingement (FAI)

A hip labral tear or femoroacetabular impingement can cause pinching, catching or a deep groin ache with deep bending.

Groin pain and hip flexor strain

Sports and sudden movements can strain the muscles at the front of the hip and groin.

Hip pain that actually comes from your back

The low back and hip share nerves and muscles, so pain felt in the buttock or hip can start in the spine. We check both. If your leg symptoms travel below the knee, see Sciatica; if your back is the main problem, see Back Pain. Knee pain sometimes starts at the hip too, and you can read about Knee Pain.

How we treat the hip

Strength and motion do most of the work.

Manual therapy and joint mobilization

Hands-on care frees a stiff hip and loosens tight muscles around it.

Hip and glute strengthening

Strong hip and glute muscles share the load that a painful joint or tendon cannot carry alone.

Gait training

We watch how you walk and teach you to change a pattern that is loading the sore spot.

Before and after hip replacement

If you are heading for a hip replacement, a few weeks of strengthening beforehand can help your recovery. After surgery, we follow your surgeon’s protocol to restore motion and strength; read post-surgical rehab. Hip strains from running, kicking or pivoting are covered at Sports Injury Rehab.
